U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger

U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger’s Better Cybercrime’s Metrics Act recently received overwhelming bipartisan support from the U.S. House of Representatives. The bicameral bill, which was passed by a 378 to 48 vote, was created to improve the federal government’s understanding of cybercrimes while also improving how the government measures, tracks, and prosecutes such crimes.

“Our nation is under constant attack from cyber criminals,” Spanberger (VA-7th District) said during a recent speech on the House floor about the topic. “And with a range of new threats emanating from adversaries around the world — including the Russian Federation, Congress has an obligation to move legislation forward that can better protect the American people, their data, their finances, and their personal information.

“Our legislation would give law enforcement agencies the tools they need to better track and identify cybercrime, prevent attacks, and hold perpetrators accountable.”

National law enforcement organizations have endorsed the bill, including the National Association of Police Organizations and National Fraternal Order of Police. It now will advance to the desk of President Joe Biden to be signed to law.
