RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – A Richmond Police officer is in police custody after being indicted by a multi-jurisdictional grand jury on felony charges of rape and aggravated sexual battery charges.
Officer Jean Assad was arrested on Thursday, Oct. 27 after the grand jury, impaneled by the City of Richmond and counties of Chesterfield, Hanover, and Henrico, indicted him on Wednesday for those felony charges.
According to the indictments obtained by NBC12, the grand jury alleges Assad raped and sexually abused a woman on Oct. 2. The details surrounding these circumstances have not been released by Richmond Police.
In his arraignment hearing on Friday morning, Assad told the judge he hired Vaughn Jones as his attorney. However, Assad’s attorney was not present in the courtroom.
Assad is being held without bond.
Richmond Police said Assad has been with the department since June 2017. He is now on leave without pay status as the department continues its investigation.
