With its recent move to a slip at the Rocketts Landing marina, Henrico County’s fire boat is able to respond quickly to any emergency on the lower James River, including fires, medical emergencies, stranded boaters and chemical spills.
The Division of Fire’s Marine Response Unit operates the 32-foot-long Munson landing craft from Firehouse 2/Darbytown. The unit’s primary area of responsibility extends along navigable portions of the river from just east of downtown to the Appomattox River junction. As part of The Port of Virginia’s Maritime Incident Response Team, the unit also could be deployed farther east, to Hampton Roads.
