Coach Ring’s interest in overall fitness began during his years in the United States Army (1988-1991). He served as a rifleman in the 1st Infantry Division. During his time in the Army he came to understand that if everything else was equal the most conditioned person would be successful.
After the military and while attending Kansas State University, Coach Ring worked in a bicycle shop in Manhattan, KS (1991-1995). It was here where he began racing mountain bikes and his fitness interests changed from an overall general program to a more endurance based protocol.
After graduating, Coach Ring moved back to the Richmond area to get that first “real job.” During this time he belonged to a gym and did the typical workout — 30 minutes on a treadmill after 30 minutes to an hour lifting weights 3 to 4 times a week using the tried and true 3 sets of 10 reps. He also discovered that this program didn’t produce the results he was looking for. After a couple of years of grinding away in the cubicle world, Coach Ring was hired by the Richmond Fire Department (1998). Once again he found that general physical preparedness best suited the general demands of firefighting. During this time Coach Ring also developed an interest in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai and eventually MMA. He began training with Coach Womack around 2000. Through trying to improve his conditioning for his chosen sport Coach Ring discovered CrossFit in 2004. He became a certified CrossFit coach in 2005. Also during this time he earned his Personal Trainer Certification from the American Council on Exercise.
Currently, Coach Ring is the co-director of the Richmond Fire Department’s Health and Wellness Initiative as well as being the lead CrossFit trainer at Total Victory MMA and CrossFit. He continues to pursue his martial arts interests having earned a purple belt in BJJ and a black belt in Combat Sombo as well as giving powerlifting and Highland Games competitions some of his attention.
Coach Ring’s varied experience is a valuable tool that he uses to prepare all of Total Victory’s athletes for competition, no matter what it may be.
