AARP Virginia officials recently launched the AARP Veterans Fraud Center, an online resource center designed to protect veterans and their families from fraud.
The organization will host a free virtual event Friday, April 22, at 9 a.m. to help teach consumers how to avoid scams, while also providing guidance to victims affected by fraud.
AARP Virginia State President Joyce Williams spoke out against the scammers in a statement.
“Targeting scams at members of the military community is unconscionable,” she said. “AARP Virginia has launched this effort to alert veterans and their families of the latest scams and how to avoid them.”
In a recent AARP survey, one in three veterans lost money to scams targeting their military alliance. According to the Federal Trade Commission, veterans in 2021 lost more than $267 million, a 162% increase compared to $102 million in 2020.
