World Wide Telescope
By Mike Hasley | March 19, 2008
Microsoft is competing against Google Sky with its World Wide Telescope due out in the Spring of 2008. The site doesn’t show anything of the “telescope,” is just has people show or talk about their amazement. So, I’m not sure if I’ll be recommending it, but it’s something to watch for.
This is the 3rd project I’ve seen recently dealing with astronomy, Google Sky and Virginia’s own initiative, Share the Skies. In Share the Skies, students will have access to a real telescope in Australia that they can access and manipulate from laptops in the classroom. The real time nature is great, but it only allows one group at a time. Thus, Google Sky and WWT would be great side lessons to use with Share the Skies.
