Extended Essay: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know

Our “kick off” for Extended Essay was held in seminar on Thursday, February 7, 2013. The following is a description of the seminars to follow.  This page provides support material for this process. Extended Essay Seminar and Topic Timeline 2013-14

February 7: Kickoff: What resources do I have to tackle a project – using the LP.  Students receive Seminar Timeline and Student/Parent Contract 4a_Learner Profile and Profile Diamond

February 14: Using the LP to look at process. Creating a flow chart to show how the LP works for them in this process. Using the LP to think about topics.  We will distribute VCU forms, field trip permission slips, etc. 4b_Venn Diagram and KWL_Choosing a Topic4c_Process Graphic Organizers

 February 21: How to enjoy your extended essay ppt; receive timeline, proposal sheets and locate resources. Download THE GUIDE!!! Extended Essay Guide 2013

 February 27-28: Librarians will be in TOK classes to instruct on preliminary research toward choosing and narrowing topics to  move toward a research question. Work will be generated for a grade in TOK

February 28: Review: how to select and narrow a topic – brainstorming, use of preliminary research, etc. http://www.umflint.edu/library/research/selecttopic.htm

March 4: Librarians will be in TOK classes to orient students to the Library of Congress system.

March 7: Review of researching techniques: understanding info cycles, topics, searching, finding, evaluating http://www.lib.washington.edu/uwill/research101/basic00.htm

 March 8: VCU field trip. Work for that trip will be generated for a grade in TOK.  A-L go in the morning. M-Z go in the afternoon. 

March 11: Librarians will be in TOK classes to work on research techniques and how to take notes effectively to prevent plagiarism. Work will be generated for a grade in TOK.

 March 20: Librarians will be in TOK classes to reinforce the EE criteria. Work will be generated for a grade in TOK.

March 21: Review: What is a good research question?

March 28: What is an argument? Choosing a rationale or lens for your proposal, essay organization, and looking at the rubric to organize your research as you start to write your paper.

April 11: Choosing a Supervisor (Remember your proposals are DUE!) Get Supervisor and mentor forms.

April 19: EE proposals returned. (Note that this is a Friday. Juniors and Seniors will swap days this week!) We will also talk about IB Exams!

April 25: Finalizing IB Exam info
