Starting today in seminar and over the next three weeks, we will be exploring language and identity as the culmination of our Culture and Identity unit. Today, we will watch several clips featuring Chinese-American author Amy Tan and her thoughts on creativity, expression, and language. Students will receive her essay “Mother Tongue” to read and reflect on. Next week, we will discuss the different “Englishes” we speak and how that reflects and creates our sense of identity. Finally, on December 15, we will host parents, teachers and students who have been English as a second language learners and their feeling about their “dual language citizenship,” drawing our many similarly experienced students into the conversation.

The Specialty Center Application process began this fall with four zone information meetings. These will be followed by Open Houses at each center as well as Center Chairs visiting middle schools. Our IB Open House, covering information about both sites (Tucker and Henrico), will be January 12 at 7 pm in HHS auditorium. Applications are due to public middle school guidance counselors by their set deadline, usually near the end of January. Final deadline for all applications due to the high schools is Friday, February 5. The Specialty Center Assessment test is Saturday, February 13, at every area high school. Assessments for the Language Immersion Center and Center for the Arts are different and on different dates. Please see the application for precise details.
