Freshman Seminar: Language and Identity
at 8:56 am on Tuesday, 1 December 2009
Starting today in seminar and over the next three weeks, we will be exploring language and identity as the culmination of our Culture and Identity unit. Today, we will watch several clips featuring Chinese-American author Amy Tan and her thoughts on creativity, expression, and language. Students will receive her essay “Mother Tongue” to read and reflect on. Next week, we will discuss the different “Englishes” we speak and how that reflects and creates our sense of identity. Finally, on December 15, we will host parents, teachers and students who have been English as a second language learners and their feeling about their “dual language citizenship,” drawing our many similarly experienced students into the conversation.
The essay: “Mother Tongue” The Mother Tongue
Student Prompt (due in seminar, December 15): Amy Tan prompt and rubric TanRubric
