Leadership Conference

What: 2013 Henrico County Leadership Conference and Workshop @ Henrico High School

When: Saturday, May 18th from 10am – 2pm

Where: Henrico High School Auditorium

Who: Henrico High School Leadership and Ethics Society presented by Infotel Communications

Cost: Lunch and seminar materials provided free of expense!

Note: This event is a pre-approved CAS goal and attendees are eligible to receive community service hours.

All students and parents are invited to join us to learn more of the implications of leadership and ethics in daily life. We hope that you will accept our invitation to attend our event and witness history as we work through facilitated group discussion on the importance of ethics and leadership. Two facilitated group outbreak discussions will follow each of the keynote addresses provided by Colonel Gerald Massengill (former Superintendent of Va State Police) and Mr. Chu & Ms. Curry from Palaxar Fraud detection. We hope that you will be able to join us and lend your leadership experience.

HHS in “America’s Best High Schools”!

Congratulations to Deep Run, Godwin, Freeman, Tucker, Hermitage and of course, Henrico High School as all were named among the top 2,000 high schools in the nation by Newsweek and The Daily Beast. With six schools on the “2013 America’s Best High Schools” list, Henrico bested all other school divisions in the Greater Richmond area, and was second only to Virginia Beach (10 schools) for the most recognized schools in Virginia.

Congratulations to Shyam (pronounced Shom) Venkatasubramanian for winning the Capital District Boys Singles Tennis Tournament. And Congratulations to Shyam and Jake Weber for their runner-up Doubles Title. Good luck in the Regional Singles and Doubles Tournament guys! And good luck to the entire team today versus Hanover for the Capital District Title!

CAS Activity Opportunity

“Do you need community service hours? How about volunteering at the Race for the Cure’s Color Station? This booth is run by the Susan G. Koman Teen Advisory Board and we need your help! Amelia Adair will be hosting a volunteer training session Tuesday April 30th at 4:15 in the auditorium. Prizes will be awarded so don’t miss out!”

April and May Seminars

April is risk-taking month. May is balance month. June, with final exams and graduation, is the month of reflection.

Freshmen will watch the documentary, The World According to Sesame Street, which explores how this American childhood favorite series had to be altered to appeal to children all over the world. This exploration will finalize our yearlong discussion of culture and identity. The worksheet, The World According to Sesame Street 2013. This will be due to students’ math teachers by May 3. We will also, of course, talk about the Personal Project as work goes on through English class.

We will not have seminars May 7, 14 or 21. Our last seminar will be May 28.

Sophomores will watch the documentary, May Lin: A Strong Clear Vision. This film documents the risk-taking efforts of 21 year old Yale student who dared to create one of our most moving national monuments, the Vietnam War Memorial. The worksheet is here: Maya Lin. It is due to math teachers by May 3. This documentary will finalize our yearlong exploration of how one person can make a difference.

We will not have seminars May 8, 15 or 22. Our last seminar will be May 29.

Juniors will continue discussing aspects of the Extended Essay. The EE Proposals and the last forms will be distributed on April 19. There will be no senior seminars in May until our last seminar, May 31. During that extended seminar, we will watch the senior slideshow, and students, garbed in their college t-shirts, will pose for their class portraits. Ice cream and goodies will be served.
