Proof Positive
at 1:28 pm on Monday, 11 February 2013
We have long touted our program’s benefits, using both anecdotal data from our students’ experience and achievement as well as studies done in the US and the world which are available through IBO. The studies advocate curricula with a high level of rigor, but many of them have not differentiated IB from AP.
Now, however, we have a study done by none other than UVa that shows that IB matters in terms of preparing for college and providing predictors for college success — particularly the Extended Essay. This project is unique to IB; AP does not offer programmatic opportunities like this.
The study finds that IB students enter college with greater research, information usage, and writing skills than their counterparts — even in AP. They show a higher ability to gather and evaluate sources, to manage time, and a lower level of anxiety about college level research projects. The study shows that 73% of the respondents had not only executed a research project at UVa, but had also a higher level of excitement about and engagement in their research.
In addition, there is a positive correlation between Extended Essay and IBDP scores and first semester and last semester college GPA’s — higher than their AP counterparts.
So, when parents ask me what is the difference between IB and AP, this study provides significant evidence that IB DOES make a difference!

Fall Parent Information Meetings
at 9:27 am on Tuesday, 25 September 2012
We have held our annual parent information meetings this week. These meetings follow Back to School Night and serve the purpose of putting classroom expectations in the context of the total program, explaining program expectations, and allowing parents to ask questions to clarify things like MYP Certificate requirements, CAS and DP exams.
The power point presentation given is here: 2012 Fall Student and Parent Orientation
Handouts on topics such as CAS, the calendar, assessments, t-shirt sales, and college acceptance were available. These were largely taken from pages on this blog.
Parents also had the opportunity to sign up for committees such as the Learner Profile Gift Bag Committee, the Breakfast Committee, and other special event committees. Please contact the IB office if you are interested in serving.
