This $100 is actually 10,000 small pixels put together by 1000s of “artists” in isolation and from 51 nations who used a simple drawing tool to copy one pixel. The pixels were so small, the artists didn’t know what they were drawing. What you see above is the end product.
This video explains the project.

The point? Global cooperation is the 21st century. It’s what our students are going to have to navigate to be successful. This example shows that 1000s of people can cooperate with little knowledge, and little pay, and nearly get the project right. The US and other nations are going to move to this type of economy since it’s cheaper, quicker, and produces a product that will only need small fixes.
What do you think?
All 4 clues were designed to get you thinking about a 21st Century Teaching Cohort. Clue 1’s answer was 21 (21st President, Pope, Super Bowl, and World Series). Clue 2 was Century (100, 21st Century Real Estate, a Sentry, and Jesus was a 1st Century figure). Clue 3 was Lyndon Johnson, Art Garfunkel (who I was later told didn’t write much), Sting, and Mussolini. All were teachers. The last clue’s answer is “Cohort.”
I’m starting this cohort for the 2008-2009 school year, but work will begin as soon as I have a team. First, here are the benefits:
- $750 stipend
- A summer institute will be available for the first goal of the cohort (more money)
- 45 staff development points
- Free Book (Click here)
- School and County-wide recognition
- I’m working on a 6th, cannot say now
Responsibilities:
- Participating in the readings and discussions
- 2 hour long meetings monthly
- One June meeting (part of your $750 stipend)
- Summer Prep (it’s not hard) Check it out here
- Implementing new teaching strategies (at most 5 in the 2008-08 school year)
- Implementing new technology strategies (same 5 lessons)
- Being observed
- Co-Present at conferences or staff development days
- Attending a movie night for 2MM (click here)
- Collaboration with cohort members and other teachers across the United States
It may seem like a lot, but I’m guessing it’s 45 hours of work for which you will get the stipend and Staff Development points. And maybe something else, which really would make it worthwhile.
This has never been done in Henrico County, and while it seems like a lot, it’s really just adding a little more to what you’re already doing.
